A self-taught artist, Josephine Troller developed her own pictorial language from the mid-1940s onwards. She only became known to the wider public in 1970, when Jean-Christophe Ammann showed her works in the Museum of Art Lucerne in the context of major contemporary positions. Thanks to this connection with current artistic work, her paintings and drawings were henceforward perceived not solely as ‘naïve art’, but as works with a highly autonomous character, and also appreciated as an interesting contribution to the trend of so-called Innerschweizer Innerlichkeit (‘Central Swiss  Inwardness’). The presentation of selected works from the artist’s estate, the Museum’s collection and private lenders is now presenting the first opportunity for a comprehensive retrospective of the work of this extraordinary Lucerne artist.
