The Lucerne artist Max von Moos (1903-1979) influenced the Central Swiss art scene for almost half a century. With his unique body of work he left traces both as an artist and as a committed and charismatic teacher at LucerneSchool of Arts and Crafts.

Kunstmuseum Luzern has devoted several exhibitions to his work, most recently in 2001 with a presentation curated by Roman Kurzmeyer. The collection of Kunstmuseum Luzern holds around 100 of his works. They form the basis of a slightly unusual presentation of the collection. Max von Moos will not be shown monographically (as in the 1984 retrospective), or placed in an art-historical context (as in 2001). Instead we are interested in a contemporary view of the historical work.

The artists Peter Roesch (b. 1950), Christian Kathriner (b. 1974) and Robert Estermann (b. 1970) have been invited to make new works as artistic commentaries on Max von Moos. They all have a personal reference to the work of Max von Moos. Their interventions, specially tailored to the exhibition, open up a subjective and contemporary perspective on Max von Moos’s oeuvre, and thus offer the opportunity to experience it in a new and exciting way. At the same time they provide an insight into the current work of three interesting, regionally rooted artists.
