In 2018 the jury awarded the Kabinett Prize to Miriam Sturzenegger. In her work Palindrome for Managed Conditions, the artist has created an installation, as generous as it is reduced, that is based on the architecture of Jean Nouvel and the urban history of Lucerne. Not only has she taken up the White Cube as a dominant architectural form, she points mainly to the invisible constructional elements that shape the building as much as the visible parts. This includes the building site, reclaimed from marshland in the 19th century and thus not that stable, and also the way the exhibition rooms in the Kunstmuseum Luzern are lit. Miriam Sturzenegger provides us with insight into the ceiling construction, the lamp structure and the open sky. Two high dual columns, typical supports, cite a traditional building element and emphasise the vertical. At the same time they remind us of concrete auger piles used to anchor something in the ground, especially in the case of difficult underfloors. The casting process she has chosen heightens this impression as the surfaces preserve traces of clay and earth. Architecture as a space-forming structure is a recurring theme in Miriam Sturzenegger’s work. Here, minimal postulates are shaped by the haptic, sensuous features of the deliberately selected materials.

Opening: Friday, 06.12., 6.30 pm
