Patricia Bucher
Übersee
Patricia Bucher (b. 1976, lives and works in Zurich) received the exhibition prize of the annual show of Central Switzerland’s artists 2002. She crossed the Atlantic by container ship from Hamburg to South America and back. The entire 29-day voyage was continuously recorded at a rate of 1 frame per second by means of a video camera fixed to the prow of the freighter.
Majestic and speechless, the sea embodies the power of silence in the outside world. In face of its harrowing monotony, we seem to be both present and far away. The sea is dissected along two axes here — the direction of travel, and that of the camera lens. Nevertheless, it retains an air of sombre mystery.
The exhibition is supported by Aargauer Kuratorium; Communication Jordi AG, Schlieren; Reederei Schepers, Hamburg, Besatzung von Contship Spirit.
