The Lucerne painter Hans Bachmann (1852–1917) is generally known as co-illustrator of the works of Jeremias Gotthelf. What is less well known is that he won prizes and was accorded acclaim at an international level too.

Today his paintings have sunk into virtual oblivion. Yet in the handling of unspectacular subjects from ordinary life he proves again and again a virtuoso master. The depiction of everyday scenes, particularly from rural working life, and his fondness for painting child portraits are shared by Albert Anker (1831–1910).

The exhibition Snow, Country and People presents paintings by further members of this circle of Inner Swiss artists, including Friedrich Stirnimann (1841–1901) and Aloys Fellmann (1855–1892), while the theme of the snow-covered landscape extends to include the thaw in Hans Emmenegger (1866–1940), and the winter landscape in Karl Friedrich Schobinger (1879–1951).
